Each year, we celebrate National Library Week as a way for all Pennsylvanians to learn about their local libraries. Whether serving as hubs for connection, learning new skills, or helping to pick out a new book, libraries and librarians throughout Pennsylvania work hard every day to ensure their patrons are leaving the library as well-rounded (and well-read) individuals.

This year’s theme, “Ready, Set, Library” promotes the idea that regardless of where one finds themselves in life’s journey—be it preparing for a new career, launching a business, or raising a family— the library provides an inclusive and supportive community where everyone belongs.

But how can you support your local library in today’s world?

One of the best ways to support libraries directly is by visiting them and obtaining a library card. A library card is your pathway to a multitude of resources and services. Did you know that many libraries offer more than just books? While most offer access to media like movies and music, some libraries also offer unique items to borrow. For example, the Dauphin County Library System recently implemented a “Lend & Tend” seed library while the Berks County Public Libraries formed a “Library of Things” with items like cookware and home improvement tools, which showcases the evolving role of libraries catering to diverse community needs. In recent years, some libraries have also included items like video games and board games for borrowers to enjoy.

Another way to support your local library is by attending library-sponsored programs, workshops, author readings, and more events. Your participation not only enriches your own life, but demonstrates vital community support for your library’s offerings. Later this month, the State Library of Pennsylvania is welcoming the public to the official Grand Re-Opening of the State Library on Friday, April 26, 2024 from 11a.m.– 5p.m at the Forum Building. As we celebrate this year’s National Library Week, we encourage you to discover your local library by visiting the Find a PA Library search webpage. Explore, become inspired, and connect with your library. Libraries are here for you, in whatever way they can lend a helping hand (or a book!)
