December 31, 2020
This message was shared for the 2020-21 school year.
20/20 is considered normal vision, right?
Not this 2020 – it was far from normal; it was unprecedented, full of indescribable challenges, intensified inequities, and unbelievable obstacles. There was no playbook to follow when each new barrier presented itself. 2020 was far from perfect.
However, as this year comes to an end, I cannot help but reflect. Even though 2020 has been far from perfect, it has opened doors, shifted our approaches to teaching and learning, and presented us with an opportunity to rethink the structures and systems that make up the education landscape for years to come.
This is in large part because of leaders like you. You modeled ingenuity, resolve, and resiliency. You built your own playbook that reflects the needs of those you are entrusted to serve. You took purposeful action to protect your community. You showed up, and you never gave up.
As educators, we are often asked “what is your why?” We know the answer guides our what and our how. We also know our why is the foundation for the structures and systems we construct and renovate. Our why is our personal mission statement – a driving force from within. As we take each intentional step forward in the new year, let us never lose sight of our why.
Thank you for continuing to protect and strengthen your community. Thank you for creating an exclusive, inclusive, and equitable playbook. Thank you for leading through uncertainty towards a better and brighter tomorrow.
It is an honor to serve alongside you, and I look forward to working together in 2021.
Wishing you and yours a safe, healthy, and happy new year,
