Team PDE,

At Governor Wolf’s direction, beginning Monday, March 16, all Pennsylvania public K-12 schools – including brick and mortar and cyber charter schools, career and technical centers (CTCs), intermediate units (IUs), and childcare centers operating within those entities are closed to help curtail the spread of COVID-19. The governor is encouraging private schools to close for two weeks as well. Universities in the PA State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) will be offering courses remotely. Public libraries have also been instructed to close.

As of today, the Pennsylvania Department of Education Office located at 333 Market Street, Harrisburg is still open. However, monitoring and visits to all schools by department staff will be postponed until at least March 30.

During the next two weeks, you may see an uptick in calls and emails from educators, parents, and others who have questions about closures or want to help their communities. I encourage you to remain patient with them and do your best to help them find the information they need. Assure them that PDE continues to collaborate with other state agencies and partnering organizations to assist communities and ensure students’ needs are met while schools are closed. You can find the most up-to-date resources on PDE’s website:

Any employee who lives in one of the counties under aggressive social distancing guidelines (Montgomery, Delaware, Bucks, and Chester, as of March 14) should remain at home and not report to work – even if they work outside of one of these counties. Employees and their respective supervisors impacted by a county closure will be directly notified.

It is vital that all employees monitor their email closely as PDE will share additional closure and telework guidance as it becomes available. As a reminder, please take home any necessary items, including equipment you would need to telework, at the end of each workday.

The state’s response to COVID-19 is evolving quickly, and information changes around the clock. Please stayed tuned over the coming days, regularly monitor your email, check InsidePDE, and visit for information.

I appreciate your continued efforts to serve our schools and communities, especially in extraordinary times.
