CSPG 52 - Middle Level Social Studies Grades 7-9

Middle Level Social Studies in grades 7-9, provides a group of programs that produce competent citizens who are aware of their rights and responsibilities. These programs describe how individuals can facilitate governmental functions and contribute to the well-being of their community through civic action and through programs that analyze and interpret past events.
Grade Level Scope of Certificate
A person holding a valid PA certificate for Middle Level Social Studies is qualified to teach respective courses in grades 7 through 9.
An educator holding a valid PA certificate for Middle Level Social Studies is qualified to teach history, civics and government, geography, political science, sociology, psychology or anthropology.
A middle level Social Studies teacher will also use appropriate skills, content area texts and resources to help students: 1) become proficient in pertinent Pa. Standards and learning processes, and 2) achieve a more complete understanding of coursework.
All individuals teaching social studies at grades 7 through 9 must have achieved a Middle Level Social Studies certificate or the Secondary Social Studies certificate.
An educator certified in this field may provide school staff development services regarding their collegial studies/skills, may serve in the role of mentor or advisor, and may assist students in understanding the “reading” content area materials related to this subject area.
The certified Middle Level Social Studies educator may teach social studies courses in grades 7, 8 and 9 and may teach Social Studies only at grade 6.
