PA MASLOW: A Hierarchy of Collegiate Basic Needs

Pennsylvania’s postsecondary learners are admitted to our institutions of higher education as freshman straight out of high school; as adults who have children, work, and other commitments; or as returning students who have taken time off – maybe a semester or maybe years. But wherever they go or whenever they return, regardless of income, socioeconomic or first-generation status, regardless of race or ethnicity, age, or gender, Pennsylvania learners need support.
A lot of attention and effort has been given to providing collegiate basic needs so learners can do what they came to do at our institutions – get their credential and create their success in the world. Pennsylvania is home to more than 300 learning and workforce development opportunities, and our Commonwealth is committed to helping learners get what they need, when they need it.
PA MASLOW recognizes Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs: Physiological Needs, Safety, and Belonging, which lead learners to Esteem and Self-Actualization; and our mission is to engage and collaborate to create supportive collegiate environments.
